Gareth Jones, Headmaster of St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne, completed his 64 day swim challenge in the channel this morning in his bid to raise money for the refurbishment of the school’s pavilion.

In deceptively tricky swimming conditions, Mr Jones swam the 1.5 miles against a strong undercurrent from Holywell to Eastbourne Pier. He was cheered on throughout the swim by children, parents and staff who greeted him with banners, flags and a hearty three cheers when he finally surfaced from the water, two and a half hours after he set off a full 75 minutes longer than he had anticipated the swim would take.

Mr Jones said, “What kept me going was the knowledge of why I was swimming and the benefit it will have on the school. The support on the seafront from pupils and parents was absolutely amazing.  I will never forget it”

The school has now raised a significant amount towards the pavilion fund target, but if you would like to donate, the school would be very grateful.
