Leweston comes together to help Ukraine

Pupils at Leweston joined with the local community to offer donations to send to families in Ukraine. The school was a drop-off site for families to donate food, toiletries, medical equipment and children's clothing.

Leweston School was a drop off site for members of staff and Leweston School parents to donate aid to families in Ukraine.

A lorry left Dorset for the Polish border on Friday 4th March, filled with essential aid.

Polish border, Julia G, Year 12, wrote how the school community came together with the rest of Dorset to help Ukraine:

"Due to the Russian invasion on Ukraine, that began on the 24th of February, thousands of Ukrainian civilians had to flee from their country. Most of them found asylum in Poland, where residents are being offered transport and accommodation. People all over Europe are responding to this devastating time and are donating vast amounts of food, hygiene essentials and clothing.

"For this reason, our Leweston community organised a collection of the most necessary products such as: food, toiletries, medical equipment, children’s clothing. We are hoping that our donation will support and inform the women and children at the border that they are not alone. The amount of items given was massive, which was truly heart-warming to see. We all believe that the Leweston Community’s contribution will be helpful during this time of need.

"On the 3rd March, Leweston’s sixth form students volunteered to help with the segregation and packing donated items in Sherborne. We were loading boxes and bags with food, clothing and other essentials into the truck that will transport them soon to the Polish-Ukraine border.

"This opportunity reminded us that selfless help is full-feeling and wonderful. Especially during time of Lent, it’s good to reflect on our own actions and how we can make positive contribution to the wider community."

The school thanked everyone for their donations and were overwhelmed with the phenomenal response, not just at Leweston, but around Dorset at places such as Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, Blandford Forum and Shaftesbury.
