14th December 2020 — Two ECS families have continued their ECS Journey and come together (virtually!) to create their own version of Carol of the Bells for 2020 to bring a message of peace and hope at this special time of year.

Lizzie, Oscar, Maddy, Felix, Thomas and Rosalila, all current or past pupils at Exeter Cathedral School, have a love for playing and singing classical and choral music and a joy in sharing this with others. They have adapted the traditional carol to reflect the difficult year we have all had in 2020: “Friends far and wide, stay safe inside. This time, this year, try not to fear. Though we're apart, you're in my heart.”

ECS has music and music-making at its heart: it is in the walls and in the blood. The School was founded in the 12th Century as a choir school and as one of today’s 42 Cathedral Schools in the UK, remains proud to educate the Choristers of Exeter Cathedral.

It’s a wonderful story of their journey of friendship and music-making which began at ECS and which has continued to blossom – despite the restrictions of lockdown. Their families are naturally very proud: “It's a real testament to their experiences over the years at ECS - it was lovely seeing them working so intensively and creatively (without too many moments of sibling rivalry!) on this project.”

Mr Featherstone, the Headmaster of ECS congratulated the pupils: “Huge congratulations to these six on their sensational arrangement and recording of Carol of the Bells. It’s a lovely moment for us as a School to think that their friendship and love for music-making all began at ECS – and to see this continuing through the next part of their musical journey. We can’t wait to see what’s next!”

The two ECS families are fundraising for Global’s Make Some Noise Emergency Appeal, which is supporting local charities that are helping those hardest hit by this pandemic.

The Cathedral School has also put together its first ever Virtual Carol Service, featuring choral contributions from every pupil in the School, as well as a different take on the traditional festive favourites.

Exeter Cathedral School (Coed 3-13) is a day and boarding school in Devon.
