28th November 2019 — On Tuesday 12 November, all members of Reigate Grammar School’s First Form (Year 7) hosted afternoon tea at the school for 19 members of the Reigate & Redhill Live at Home scheme.

The scheme offers support and friendship to older people living in their own homes; helping to maintain independent living, improve wellbeing and reduce isolation.

Reigate Grammar School students treated their visitors to homemade cakes and shortbread, and sang a mix of swing and other songs.

Live at Home volunteers who attended along with the scheme’s members commented: “We had an amazing time today, and were thrilled to have enjoyed a delightful afternoon of entertainment.”

One of the visitors said that she found it “lovely to be surrounded by happy young children” and another wrote a delightful letter afterwards to the school to tell organisers just how much it had meant, describing the occasion as “a wonderful opportunity for young and old to meet. Your students were charming in how they listened to stories from us elderly, and in the gracious way they served us. Thank you so much.”

RGS staff were very proud to see pupils engaging with the older members and learning a lot of interesting information from them about their lives. Head of First Form Nick Newman observed: “even the more shy First Formers found it easy to open up to and communicate with the visitors.”

Caroline Foxton of Voluntary Action Reigate & Banstead (VARB) told us: “A key driver for introducing MHA East Surrey Reigate & Redhill Live at Home to Reigate Grammar School in May this year was to see which community events and activities could potentially unite the generations around common passions and interests, such as music, drama and conversation. As part of VARB’s Young Volunteer Project, we are keen to strengthen intergenerational connections through community projects.”
