4th May 2020 — Enterprising Beechwood Park pupil Sophie, who began the Easter holidays printing face shields on her home 3D printer, has subsequently increased her efforts to awe-inspiring levels. In order to increase her original printing capacity, Sophie fundraised to be able to buy additional printers and to date, has raised over £4,000, which has enabled her to buy seven new printers as well as all the other materials required to keep up with demand.

At the time of writing, Sophie has produced over 2,000 face shields, which have been distributed to local GPs, hospitals, community nurses, ambulance first responders, care homes, pharmacists, neonatal staff, midwives, health visitors, dialysis units, podiatrists, sonographers, and vets. The recipients have been delighted to receive the shields, some of whom had had no PPE previously.

As a result of her efforts, Sophie has, to date, received requests for approximately 3,500 face shields, with requests continuing to come in. She is currently working on an order of 1,000 masks for the Institute of Podiatry. As you can imagine, Sophie (together with the help of another local teenager) has been printing non-stop throughout the Easter holidays and beyond, producing 100 masks each day which has left her with very little ‘downtime’. She is currently continuing this phenomenal effort at the same time as following her remote school timetable.

In addition, one of the most challenging aspects of 3D printing is the amount of regular maintenance that the printers require. Sophie is managing this as well as taking time to share advice through Facetime training sessions to others who are starting out 3D printing PPE.

Sophie has received a huge amount of positive feedback from many very grateful individual care workers and institutions who have received her visors.
