21st June 2021 — Professional sports players spend hours training and work hard every day on improving their skills and fitness to make sure they are at the top of their game. It’s no surprise therefore, that professional cricketers don’t prioritise sharing their expertise with young and developing players. This is not true of Mahesh Rawat.

Mahesh is the current overseas professional playing for Middleton Cricket Club First XI. A former India A and Rajahstan Royals batsman and wicket keeper, Mahesh is training the junior boys and girls at Middleton Cricket Club on a Friday evening and when invited, he is visiting local schools to inspire and coach the children.

At Westbourne House School in Chichester Mahesh has been coaching Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 boys and girls during their games lessons.

Josh, Year 6 pupil and Middleton player, said: “He is very positive and his knowledge is amazing. It was great to have a legend at our school.” Year 7 pupil and Middleton player, Emily added: “It was great the way he talked to us as equals and explained simple ways we can improve our game. It was also amazing to hear how his batting average was 152 and he scored over 1000 runs in a cricket season – that is something to aim for!”

Westbourne House School Headmaster, Martin Barker, said: “It has been a pleasure to welcome Mahesh to our school. The children have loved him taking part in their games lessons and he has been a true cricket inspiration across the school.”

Mahesh is playing at Middleton CC throughout the summer. To watch him and the Middleton team play, visit the club website If you would like Mahesh to visit your school please contact MCC chairman Matt Warren via the club.

Mahesh said: “It is my privilege to work in an outstanding atmosphere with such a talented bunch of players. I am really thankful to Westbourne House School and Middleton CC for giving me this opportunity and I hope others will follow. We must inspire the next generation of cricket players so more and more young people join the cricket family.”
