A team of 26 swimmers from the Crescent School travelled to Walsall Baths on Tuesday 21 November to compete in the Independent Schools’ Association’s Midlands Swimming Gala. Success at the Regional event would qualify pupils for the ISA National Championships due to take place in January 2018 at the London Olympic Aquatics Centre.

The children swam 25m in the pool and the races included both individual events and exciting team relays. For most of the children it was their very first experience of competitive galas but what was important for all of Crescent’s pupils was encouraging each other, right from the start through to the finish of every race.

Overall Crescent finished in 8th place out of the 27 schools that took part, but two pupils qualified to represent the Midlands region and will swim in the forthcoming National Championships.

Crescent School’s Head of PE, Mr Matt Phillips, was delighted and commented, “There was a fabulous atmosphere poolside with the whole team willing each other on. There were some excellent swims, tight finishes and amazing times. The green cap of Crescent was constantly up with the leaders and lots of the children won their heats. That Crescent managed to get some top three finishes is amazing especially as most of our children do not swim for a club.”

Individual results of note include:

Jamie Capelett- 2nd Year 5 Freestyle 18.06

Joshua Gorbutt- 3rd Year 4 Breaststroke 26.75

Matthew Browne- 3rd Year 6 Breaststroke 22.00

Marco Rodriguez Hernandez- 4th Year 4 Freestyle 18.47

Samuel Lau- 4th Year 6 Butterfly 19.32

Ethan Capelett- 4th Year 6 Freestyle 17.68

Class V’s Jamie Capelett swam fabulously and his time qualified him for the Year 5 Freestyle Relay and Class IV’s Marco Rodriguez Hernandez also swam strongly to qualify for the Year 4 Freestyle Relay.

In the relays, Crescent sadly had more disqualifications than proper finishes, despite it usually being a strength of the school.

Matt Phillips, continues, “Well done to everyone! It is marvellous that this year we have children who have qualified for the prestigious National competition in London.”
