Congratulations to Oakham’s 1st XIV Fly Half, Sam Costelow, who has been selected for the Welsh U20 squad.

Sam, who is 18 years old, will be taking part in a full Six Nations programme - he has already joined the squad for the first game in France this weekend, and will be joining them again for the game against Italy on 10 February in Mantova. Sam will also play against Scotland in Edinburgh on 8 March and compete against England and Ireland at home in Colwyn Bay (on 22 February and 15 March respectively).

“It is a remarkable achievement for a player to be selected for a U20 squad when they are still at School,” says Oakham’s Director of Rugby, Andy Rice. “It is a real opportunity for Sam to play for three years at this level, and it is a testimony to his ability and skill on the pitch.”

It will certainly be a busy few months for Sam, who is studying for his A-levels at Oakham. “We’ll be carefully managing his playing schedule alongside his studies and preparation for his exams this summer,” adds Andy. “Once he finishes his exams in June, he’ll then maybe have a chance to join the rest of the U20 squad for the later stages of the U20 World Cup in Argentina – which will be an amazing experience for him.”
