Author Theresa Flavin inspires pupils

Pupils at ‘outstanding’ prep school Belmont Grosvenor were given the chance to get creative when writer and illustrator Teresa Flavin dropped by.

The Leeds-based author spent a day at the Harrogate school working with youngsters from Reception to Year 6.

As well as reading extracts from her popular books for older readers, The Blackhope Enigma and The Crimson Shard, Teresa had fun with the younger children creating a wacky mouse character and building stories around him!

Youngsters in Years 5 and 6 turned their own stories into mini books, using a hand-drawn treasure map, jewels and a pirate hat to spark their imagination!

The day-long workshop was the latest in a series of inspiring events taking place at Belmont Grosvenor School, just three miles from Harrogate. These include a return visit from Olympic swimmer James Kirton, who officially opened the newly refurbished swimming pool earlier thismonth.

The co-educational prep school, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, caters for children from three months to 11 years.

Author Teresa, who writes about things she loves including mystery, magic and art in amazing locations, as well as history, mythology, the supernatural and a little bit of romance, enjoyed her visit to Belmont Grosvenor.

“I always come away from school visits feeling inspired by the pupils’ enthusiasm, inventiveness, ideas and dreams. There is nothing like a classroom buzzing with children imagining, writing, drawing and making – and I am privileged to help them engage with their own creativity,” she said.

Sophie Johnston, Head of English at Belmont Grosvenor School said all the children had been inspired by Teresa’s visit.

“Teresa created a vibrant and animated atmosphere for the children. They were all fully engaged in the activities and were inspired to go on and create their own work. The day flew by and was a real educational treat for everyone involved,” she said.

Belmont Grosvenor School, along with its Magic Tree Nursery, is set in 20 acres of grounds at Birstwith, Harrogate, and caters for children from three months to 11 years.
