Returning to the Dragon for Christmas Term, both children and staff looked forward to discovering their new Headmaster. Dr Crispin Hyde-Dunn’s predecessor, John Baugh, led the school for 15 years, a period characterised by the three ‘rules’ he laid down at his first assembly – ‘be kind, be kind, be kind’. So it was understandable that Dr Hyde-Dunn’s first assembly was much anticipated, and carried more than the usual new year buzz of excitement.
Crispin emphasised that the legacy left by John and Wendy would continue: ‘being kind will always remain at the heart of the school’. The Dragon has always been a ‘pioneering, imaginative and inspirational’ school and a new year is a time for ‘new beginnings and looking forward’. He urged the children to enjoy the ‘world of opportunity’ available to them at the Dragon, from the enormous range of clubs, activities and sports to opportunities for music and drama.
Crispin spoke of the strength we can derive from the habit of creating memories of every special moment. In the busyness of life at the Dragon he encouraged the children to balance work and play: ‘If you are happy, you will do your best’, he said. He also reassured the children that they are part of a community ready to encourage and guide them, promising the support of the staff to help them achieve their goals.
To a smile on every child’s face Crispin quoted the words of ‘a very famous headmaster, Albus Dumbledore’: ‘It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.’ Crispin concluded ‘your choices have the power to take you wherever you want to go… just don’t forget to take a snapshot of those moments along the way’.
With characteristic ordered liveliness, the Dragons left the hall to start the new year, assured that the School has an inspirational new Headmaster.
