23rd August 2018 — With the average GCSE grade achieved once more being an A, there were plenty of smiles at The Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS) as pupils opened their result envelopes.
40% of the grades achieved were A*/8-9; 67% A*- A /7–9; 88% A*- B/5-9 with 99% gaining A*-C/4-9.
“This is a strong set of results, with some wonderful individual achievements,” said Dr Anne Cotton, the Head of The Portsmouth Grammar School who was overseeing her first set of public examinations at the school. “This is a great tribute to the hard work of the pupils and to the dedication of their teachers.”
Amongst the pupils celebrating today was Dominic Ager, who achieved a fantastic six grade 9s and four A*s. “He hasn’t stopped smiling since he opened his envelope,” said Mrs Jenny Ager. Dominic added, “I am ecstatic with these results, really surprised but very happy.” Dominic will go on to take the International Baccalaureate in the Sixth Form at PGS.
Sacha Hemingway was also very happy today having gained four grade 9s, 4 grade 8s, two A*s and an A. The results included a grade 9 in Music and a grade 8 in Drama, a passion that has been reflected during a summer of work experience at the Chichester Festival Theatre as part of their Learning, Education and Participation scheme which creates a year-round programme of practical workshops, talks, tours, and performances. “I’ve really enjoyed my summer and the opportunity I’ve had to work back stage and in the theatre offices at Chichester,” said Sacha. “I’m overjoyed with my results and I’m looking forward to September now.” Sacha’s results are part of a strong set of results for the Music department this year who saw 83% of the grades awarded being 7-9.
Georgina Lewis has been keeping up with her netball over the summer as part of the Surrey Storm U17 development squad – Surrey Storm are a Netball Superleague team based in Guildford. Today she was celebrating achieving five grade 9s, two grade 8s and three A*s. “I have had a great summer,” said Georgina. “My results today just top it off!”
Freddy Wood has spent a lot of the summer on the water as a successful and keen sailor and as part of his summer job working at Hayling Island Sailing Club. Freddy achieved a fantastic four grade 9s, two grade 8s, three A*s and an A. “I am very happy and pretty relieved,” said Freddy. “I was hoping for maybe a few 8s, so seeing my grades today was really great.”
“Well over one third of our pupils gained nine or more A*-A/9-7 grades – a tremendous achievement,” concluded Anne. “Thank you to everyone who has helped to support these pupils throughout their GCSE studies: there is a great deal to celebrate here.”
